The 1961 Apostille Convention abolished the requirement of the traditional long and costly legalisation process for foreign public documents, replacing it with a single Apostille certificate issued by an authorised body (opens in new tab) in the country where the document was issued. More than 120 contracting parties (opens in new tab) recognise it.

Education certificates
Education certificates submitted for legalisation must be signed, certified and dated by a UK solicitor, notary public or British Council representative. If certified by the British Council it must be an authentic educational qualification certificate — check with your local British Council first as this service is not universally available.
Medical records
A medical document submitted for an Apostille certificate must be signed by a medical practitioner and include the signatory’s contact details — including email — in case the Legalisation Office needs to verify the signature.
Birth certificates (UK)
The Legalisation Office only accepts original UK birth certificates or certified copies from the General Register Office (GRO) or local register office.
