Help when your passport is lost or stolen
Losing a passport, or having one stolen, is stressful, especially if you have travel booked. The process has two parts: cancelling the old document so it cannot be misused, and applying for a replacement. We help UK residents work through both calmly and correctly.
A lost or stolen UK passport should be reported and cancelled as soon as possible. Once cancelled it can no longer be used, even if you find it again. You can report it directly through GOV.UK (opens in new tab). After that, a replacement is treated as a new application.
What we help with
- Understanding the steps to report and cancel the lost or stolen passport
- Preparing and checking your replacement application before it is submitted
- Gathering the right supporting documents and photos to the correct standard
- Explaining options if you need to travel sooner, including Emergency Travel Documents
- Booking and preparing for any appointment that may be required
- Answering questions about what to do if the original document later turns up
What to prepare
- Details of the lost or stolen passport, if you have them (number, dates)
- Proof of identity and any documents confirming your circumstances
- A recent, compliant passport photo
- Your travel dates, so we can discuss whether a faster service is suitable
- A crime reference number if the passport was stolen and you reported it to police
Emergency travel
If you are abroad and need to travel before a replacement can be issued, an Emergency Travel Document (opens in new tab) may be an option for a specific journey. This is different from a standard passport, and we can explain how it works and help you prepare the request.
HM Passport Office makes all decisions on passports and emergency documents. Our role is to make the process clearer and your application as complete as possible, so nothing is held up by avoidable errors.
