Austria Schengen Visa Requirements
To apply for an Austria Schengen Visa, you’ll need:
- Visa Application Form:
Complete the application form online and print it from the Austrian visa portal or complete it at the Austrian Consulate’s website.
The form must be signed by the applicant, or, in the case of minors, by a parent or legal guardian.
One Photograph: A recent, passport-size photo in color with a white background. The photograph must meet the Schengen visa photo requirements (opens in new tab).
Passport (Original):
Signed passport with at least two blank pages for visa purposes.
Must be valid for at least 90 days beyond the return date of the trip to the Schengen Area and issued within the last 10 years.
Extended passports older than 10 years are not accepted; applicants with such passports must obtain a new passport.
Photocopies of previous Schengen visas issued in the last 3 years, if applicable.
- UK Residence Permit:
UK immigration status is now held as a UKVI eVisa. Physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) expired on 31 December 2024 and are no longer valid. You will need to provide a share code from the UKVI online checking service.
Must be valid for at least 1 month beyond the return date from Austria.
- Proof of Current Occupation:
Employee: Recent (less than 10 days old) signed employer letter on company letterhead, addressed to the Mission, confirming employment and including the last three payslips (originals and photocopies).
Student: Recent (less than 10 days old) signed letter from a UK university/college/school, confirming enrollment.
Self-Employed: Recent (less than 10 days old) letter from an accountant, solicitor, bank manager, or Companies House Certificate of Incorporation. If the applicant’s name is not on the certificate, additional proof of connection to the company is required.
Unemployed/Retired:
Receiving Benefits: Recent original letter from Jobcentre or Pension Service.
Not Receiving Benefits: Cover letter explaining the financial situation.
Housewife/man (if married): Applicant may be sponsored by their spouse/partner; the following documents are required:
Marriage certificate (original and copy) – if issued outside the EU and not in English, it must be translated by a certified translator.
Spouse/partner’s passport (original and copy).
Spouse/partner’s proof of occupation, proof of funds, and a signed cover letter confirming sponsorship.
- Proof of Financial Means:
Latest 3 months of UK bank statements showing the applicant’s name, address, and a positive end balance dated within one week of the visa application submission date.
Bank balance should cover the expenses for the stay in Austria and return travel.
Online bank account printouts are also accepted if they meet the above requirements.
- Proof of Transportation and Intention to Return:
Confirmed return travel tickets showing the applicant’s name and travel dates (airplane, train, bus, or coach).
When traveling by car: Car registration, insurance, and return travel tickets (ferry or Eurotunnel) mentioning the car’s registration number and the driver’s license. If the applicant is not the driver, a cover letter from the driver (signed and dated) confirming joint travel and travel dates is required.
Travel tickets booked through a travel agency: A receipt, invoice, or payment confirmation is also required.
- Proof of Accommodation:
Confirmed hotel or accommodation booking showing the applicant’s name, travel dates, and address details.
If the applicant’s name is not on the reservation: A joint travel confirmation letter signed and dated by the person whose name is on the reservation, along with a photocopy of that person’s passport/ID card, is required. If the ID does not have a signature, provide a signed page.
For group accommodations: A list of names of the group members, or alternatively, names may also be mentioned on the travel ticket.
Travel Health Insurance: Must show the applicant’s name, have coverage of at least €30,000, be valid in all Schengen countries, and cover the entire period of intended stay in the Schengen area. The insurance must be obtained from a company based in the United Kingdom or a Member State.
Proof of Business Invitation (for business visa applications):
Invitation Letter: An invitation letter from the company or business in Austria confirming the purpose of the visit, travel dates, and any arrangements for accommodation or travel (if applicable).
Entry Tickets or Registration for Events: For employees attending fairs, congresses, conferences, or seminars in Austria, provide entry tickets or registration confirmations (note: students must apply as tourists).
- Proof of Purpose of Stay in Austria:
Certificate of a paid tourist package.
Hotel or other accommodation booking.
Private accommodation booking (including a copy of the decision from the competent office in Austria approving the rental).
Day-to-day itinerary with confirmed accommodation for the entire stay.
When to Apply for an Austria Schengen Visa
Submit your application at least 15 days before your intended travel date and no earlier than 6 months before departure. Early application helps avoid delays and ensures sufficient time for processing.
Austria Visa Processing Time
Processing is typically around 10 working days from when the Embassy or Consulate receives the application (excluding transportation time); the legal maximum is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 calendar days in individual cases.
Extended processing time: If additional scrutiny or an interview is required, or if additional documents are requested, the processing time may be extended.
During high-demand periods, such as holiday seasons, processing times may be longer. Applicants are advised to submit applications at least two weeks prior to the travel date, preferably earlier during holiday periods.
