France Schengen Visa – Essential Travel Guide and Requirements

Planning a trip to France? A Schengen visa opens up France and 28 other European countries for travelers. Here’s a concise guide to help you understand the process and requirements.

Why Visit France?

France is renowned for its rich culture, historic landmarks, and picturesque landscapes:

France Schengen Visa Requirements

To apply for a France Schengen Visa, you’ll need:

  1. Visa Application Form: Complete the France short-stay visa application form.
  • Print the form and sign it where indicated.

  • Each applicant, including children, requires a separate form.

  • Ensure that all information entered is accurate and matches the supporting documentation provided on the appointment date to avoid delays.

  1. Photograph: Two recent, passport-size photos in color with a white background. The photograph must meet the Schengen visa photo requirements (opens in new tab).

  2. Valid Travel Document (Passport):

  • Issued within the last 10 years and containing at least two blank pages.

  • Valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure date from the Schengen Area, or, in the case of a long-stay visa, at least 3 months beyond the requested visa expiry date.

  • Ensure to transmit (scan) all pages of your travel document containing visas, entry and exit stamps, or any other inscriptions.

  1. Proof of UK Residency (for non-UK nationals):
  • Proof of UK immigration status is now the UKVI eVisa. Generate a share code at GOV.UK (opens in new tab) and provide it (with a printout of your status) so the French Consulate can verify your immigration status. Physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) are no longer valid evidence.

  • If your immigration status is still endorsed in your passport (for example an indefinite-leave stamp or vignette), provide that endorsement in addition to your eVisa share code.

  1. Socio-Professional Situation:
  • Employee: Provide a recent, signed official letter from your employer confirming your employment, and/or payslips for the last three months.

  • Self-employed: Submit a recent letter from your accountant, banker, or solicitor confirming your independent professional activity or company ownership in the UK, along with a letter from British financial authorities.

  • Student: Provide a recent signed letter from your school or university in the UK confirming your enrollment status.

  1. Evidence of Sufficient Funds:
  • Last 3 months’ UK bank statements showing your full name and address, demonstrating sufficient funds for the entire duration of your stay. Alternatively, traveler’s cheques providing the same financial guarantees are accepted.

  • If financially sponsored by a spouse/partner, submit a marriage certificate and bank statements of your spouse/partner.

  1. Proof of Return Travel and Accommodation:
  • Confirmed return travel tickets (airline, ferry, or train) showing the applicant’s name and travel dates to and from the Schengen area. If traveling within Schengen countries, provide travel tickets to confirm your itinerary.

  • Consider booking a fully refundable ticket, as a complete application does not guarantee visa approval.

  • Accommodation Confirmation: Submit one of the following to confirm your accommodation arrangements:

  • Hotel booking or rental agreement showing your name, dates, and address of stay.

  • Attestation d’accueil: If staying with a host in France, obtain an Attestation d’accueil (opens in new tab) from the local town hall (“Mairie”) of your host’s place of residence. This document is required to confirm your stay with family or friends.

  • Booking confirmation from a travel agency if booked through a tour operator.

  1. Travel Health Insurance: Must show the applicant’s name, have coverage of at least €30,000, be valid in all Schengen countries, and cover the entire period of intended stay in the Schengen area. The insurance must be obtained from a company based in the United Kingdom or a Member State.

Business Visa Requirements

For business applications, you will need to provide:

  • Formal Invitation Letter: A letter from a company in France inviting you to attend meetings, conferences, or any commercial, industrial, or professional events. This letter should include:

  • The purpose and duration of your visit.

  • The contact details of the inviting company.

  • Proof of Registration: If attending a conference or exhibition, provide proof of registration or tickets for the event.

  • Additional Documentation: Any other documents that demonstrate commercial or professional relationships, such as contracts or agreements with the inviting company.

When to Apply for a France Schengen Visa

Submit your application at least 15 days before your intended travel date and no earlier than 6 months before departure. Early application helps avoid delays and ensures sufficient time for processing.

France Visa Processing Time

Visa application processing times are generally up to 15 calendar days, but this may vary depending on your nationality and the French Consulate where you apply. Applicants are advised to allow sufficient time between the appointment date and travel date to ensure the Consulate can process the application. No guarantees can be given on the application’s return date, as delays may occur.
