UK Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent visa is for leaders, and potential leaders, in three broad areas: academia or research, arts and culture, and digital technology. It is one of the most flexible work visas the UK offers — no employer sponsorship, no job offer, and no minimum salary.

How the visa works

For most applicants there are two stages: first an endorsement confirming your standing in your field, then the visa application itself. You can apply for both together or endorsement first. Applicants who have won an eligible prestigious prize can bypass endorsement entirely and apply straight for the visa.

Endorsement is assessed under one of two standards:

  • Exceptional Talent — you are already an established leader in your field.
  • Exceptional Promise — you show the potential to become a leader, usually earlier in your career.

Both lead to the same visa; the difference shows up at settlement, where Exceptional Talent qualifies for indefinite leave to remain after three years and Exceptional Promise after five.

Who endorses your application

The endorsing route depends on your field. Academia and research applications are handled through UK Research and Innovation and its partner bodies, including the Royal Society, the British Academy and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Arts and culture — spanning combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre, and also architecture, fashion design, film and television — is assessed by Arts Council England and its partners. Digital technology covers people building or scaling digital products, from engineers and data scientists to product and business leads.

What makes a strong application

Endorsement rests on evidence: a personal statement, letters of recommendation from recognised experts, and a documented record of your work and its impact — publications and citations for researchers, exhibitions and reviews for the arts, product and commercial impact for tech. Assembling that evidence coherently, against the specific criteria of your endorsing body, is where most of the work lies.

How we help

We help you identify the right route and standard, structure the endorsement evidence and recommendation letters to the criteria that apply to your field, and prepare the visa application once endorsement is granted — including applications for your partner and children.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a job offer for the Global Talent visa?
No. The Global Talent visa has no job-offer requirement, no sponsor and no minimum salary. You can work as an employee, be self-employed, start a company, change jobs freely, and do unpaid or voluntary work. This flexibility is what sets it apart from the Skilled Worker route.
What's the difference between Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise?
Exceptional Talent is for people who are already recognised leaders in their field; Exceptional Promise is for those who show the potential to become leaders — typically earlier in their career. The practical difference is the route to settlement: Exceptional Talent can apply for indefinite leave to remain after 3 years, Exceptional Promise after 5 years.
How long is the Global Talent visa granted for?
You can choose any length from one to five years when you apply, and pay the Immigration Health Surcharge accordingly. There is no limit on how many times you can extend, and time on the visa counts towards settlement.
Can I settle in the UK with a Global Talent visa?
Yes. You can apply for indefinite leave to remain after 3 years (Exceptional Talent) or 5 years (Exceptional Promise), subject to meeting the residence and continuous-activity requirements for your field. ILR can lead to British citizenship a year later.
Which bodies endorse Global Talent applications?
Endorsement is by field: UK Research and Innovation and partners such as the Royal Society, the British Academy and the Royal Academy of Engineering for academia and research; Arts Council England for arts and culture (including film, TV, fashion and architecture through its partners); and the digital technology route for tech. Holders of certain prestigious prizes can skip endorsement and apply directly.
