Naturalisation is how adults become British citizens. Children apply via Child Registration instead.
Core eligibility
- Held Indefinite Leave to Remain (or equivalent) for at least 12 months (no wait if applying as spouse of a British citizen)
- Continuous residence and absence limits met (≤ 450 days in the 5-year period)
- You must have been absent from the UK for no more than 90 days in the 12 months immediately before your application
- Good character — declared and checked against criminal, financial and immigration history
- Passed the Life in the UK Test and meets English language requirement
If applying as the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen, the qualifying period is 3 years with no more than 270 days absence.
